Let me tell you the real story of Jeju.

Haenyeo (해녀) — Mothers of the Jeju Sea

They walk into the cold sea at dawn carrying nothing but a wetsuit, a pair of fins, and a net. No scuba tank. They free-dive 10 meters down, hold their breath for two minutes, harvest abalone and sea snails by hand, and surface with a whistle — the sumbisori (숨비소리) — that tells their sisters they made it back. Then they go down again.

In 2016, UNESCO inscribed the Culture of Jeju Haenyeo on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. What UNESCO recognized was not just a fishing technique — it was a matriarchal community that had quietly run the island's sea economy for over a millennium, organized around three principles: protect the weakest diver, divide the catch by need, and never take more than the sea can give back.

Down from 26,000 divers in 1965 to roughly 4,500 today, the haenyeo are aging out — most are now in their 70s and 80s. Jeju runs official haenyeo schools (해녀학교) to pass on the lung, the technique, and the codes of the bulteok (불턱), the warming-fire huts where the women change before and after each dive.
